Our Ecklonia cava Story
After six years of development, we discovered a troubling reality: virtually every Ecklonia cava product we tested was inauthentic. When we first attempted to source the seaweed, no validated botanical reference materials existed to test authenticity. Rather than accept the limitation, we partnered with a Korean university and specialized DNA laboratory to create the first validated Ecklonia cava reference material, working alongside experienced botanists to establish proper identification protocols.
The results were shocking. Every sample we tested from existing suppliers failed DNA verification, including products from major US brands that were selling completely different seaweed species. We realized we needed to build an entirely new supply chain from scratch. This led us to discover why authentic Ecklonia cava is so rare: as a Korean government-protected species, it cannot be directly harvested from the ocean. Instead, we established facilities in Korea and built relationships with multiple suppliers who collect the seaweed only when it naturally washes ashore during cyclones.
Our investment in proper sourcing paid unexpected dividends when we conducted deeper analytical chemistry on dieckol, the primary bioactive compound. We discovered that Ecklonia cava from specific areas of Jeju Island contains significantly higher dieckol concentrations naturally.
